Village of East Rochester successfully completes Third annual CleanSweep event

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Over 140 volunteers donated more than 570 hours of community service by participating in the Village of East Rochester's 3rd annual CleanSweep event on Saturday, June 12th. This event was designed to spruce up the village and promote green behavior. "The community support for this event was phenomenal. This event started three years ago to help create awareness that there is more to conservation and recycling than taking your blue bin to the curb each week," said Andrew Serrano, Village of East Rochester Deputy Mayor. "This event continues to grow each year, and this year welcomed the newly formed Chamber of Commerce as a co-sponsor."

Volunteers met at Village Hall at 9:00 a.m. to receive their assignments, and neon yellow t-shirts, bags, pails, and gloves to clean the streets. Volunteers removed 111 bags, weighing a total of 3,300 pounds, of garbage from village streets and parks. "It was a great day in the village, residents and businesses joined together to clean and beautify our wonderful community," said Martin D'Ambrose, Village Administrator.

The GreenER committee also sponsored a computer and electronics recycling event for residents and small businesses during the same time as the CleanSweep. Over 4 pallets of electronics were collected, diverting this waste from landfills. Rochester Data Storage collected 3 large bins of documents to be shredded. Other items collected for recycling included: pill bottles, gently used clothing, tattered fabric and used greeting cards. The East Rochester Parks committee was busy in Edmund Lyon Park with several projects including planting trees, adding mulch and enhancing the walking path.
